WCO, ACD, and the positions of subjects

چکیده
This paper presents a brief argument from the interaction of weak crossover (WCO), antecedent-contained deletion (ACD), and other facts of VP-ellipsis that subjects are base-generated in a predicateinternal position but move through an intermediate A-position on their way to their final landing site (the specifier of TP) and can take scope in this intermediate position. The following example, from Evans 1988 (14), is a puzzle for standard accounts of VP-ellipsis and weak crossover: (1) Someone who shouldn’t have kissed each man. As Evans points out, this sentence is ambiguous, having among its possible readings the one given in (2), which will be of interest here. (2) ∀x(man(x) → ∃y[person(y) ∧ kissed(y, x) ∧ shouldn′t-have-kissed(y, x)]) The important thing to note in characterizing this reading is that the deleted VP in the relative clause adjoined to the subject DP contains a variable bound by the object quantifier. It is parallel, thus, to more familiar and often discussed examples like (3a), which has a reading like that of (3b) (see Sag 1976, Dalrymple et al. 1991, Hardt 1999, among many others): (3) a. John greeted each arriving guest after Mary did. b. John greeted [each arriving guest]1 after Mary greeted him1.

WCO, ACD and QR of DPs
In this paper I point out a hitherto unnoticed interaction between weak crossover (WCO) and antecedent-contained deletion (ACD) that provides another piece of evidence for an LF A-bar movement account of ACD, and against the A-movement account proposed in Hornstein 1994, adding to the case against Hornstein made in Kennedy 1997. Interestingly, the key piece of evidence, an ACD construction with...
متن کاملEffect of remediation strategy on crude oil biodegradation kinetics and half life times in shoreline sediment samples
Bioremediation, the process by which microorganisms degrade organic compounds to non-toxic or less toxic substances, has been widely used for cleanup of coastal ecosystems after oil spills. In this study, the hydrocarbon degradation rate and half lives in three bioremediation strategies (natural attenuation, biostimulation, and bioaugmentation) were compared in weathered crude oil (WCO) contami...

PURPOSE To study the changes in anterior chamber depth (ACD), anterior chamber angle (ACA), and pupil diameter (PD) during accommodation. METHODS Eighty eyes of 80 subjects, aged 22 to 40 years, were included. The rotating Dual Scheimpflug and a Placido disc system (Galilei G4, Ziemer Ophthalmic Systems AG, Switzerland) was used to measure the changes in ACD, ACA, and PD during accommodation....

Introduction: The present study aimed to assess the effects of Ramadan fasting on micronutrients and their correlations with ocular biometry. Methods: This prospective study was conducted on 89 healthy volunteers (51 males and 38 females) with the mean of 34.98±9.10 years in Mashhad, Iran. Participants received complete ophthalmic and systemic examinations one week before and one week after the...
متن کاملApproach to Anemia in Hospitalized Patients with Infectious Diseases; Is it Appropriate?
Anemia of chronic diseases (ACD) is a common problem in patients with infectious diseases and can influence the quality of life and patients' survival. Despite the clinical importance of ACD, data are still lacking regarding this problem in the infectious diseases. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence, related factors, outcome and approaches to anemia in the infectious diseases ward. Thi...
